The Amount Estimation of Oil Pollutants in the Oil-Producing Area “Oil Stones” in the Caspian Sea Using Multifrequency Radar Data

Abstract

The amount of oil pollutants in the oil-producing area “Neftyanye Kamni” (“Oil Stones”) in the Caspian Sea is estimated using multifrequency radar data. The estimates are made within the theory of the sea roughness damping by the surfactant films of finite width. The theoretical and experimental radar contrasts on the sea surface at different wavelengths compared have allowed to estimate spatial inhomogeneities of the oil film width and to determine the average oil spill density of 62 t/km2. The estimated pollution regions in the oil-producing area suggest that aerial survey witnessed just the event of emergency oil spillage.
