Ionospheric Spread-F Effects as Observed at the Antarctic Base “Akademik Vernadsky”
Abstract
Ionospheric spread-F effects as observed at the Antarctic base “Akademik Vernadsky” are studied. The 1996-2002 data of vertical ionospheric sounding and of geomagnetic activity monitoring are analyzed. The correlation between the formation of strong ionospheric inhomogeneities, manifesting themselfes on ionograms as spread-F, and disturbances in the geomagnetic field is investigated. Two formation mechanisms of the ionospheric inhomogeneities have been revealed, one connected with the propagation of internal gravity waves through the ionosphere and the other with the effect of geomagnetic field perturbations.
